Run through these seven checks before you call. They solve a fair number of “no heat” and “no cool” calls on their own, and anything you do find tells the technician exactly where to start. If you find a problem, shut the system off the way that step says so it is not damaged while you wait. If you still need us, we handle emergency A/C and furnace repair.
1 Power
Furnace power switch is ON (looks like a normal light switch, on or near the furnace)
Furnace door is on correctly (a loose or missing door opens the door safety switch)
Outdoor disconnect is closed and dry (the gray box with the whip running to the outdoor unit)
No tripped breaker for the furnace or the A/C (a tripped breaker usually means an electrical problem, call to have it found)
2 Thermostat
Set to Cool (A/C) or Heat (furnace), and set past the current room temperature
Screen isn’t blank or dim (check batteries)
Waited a full 5 minutes after changing the setting
3 Condensate drain
Float switch (overflow safety switch): pull the top off, no water inside (water inside = a clogged drain)
Clogged drain with a P-trap cleanout: open the cleanout and clear the trap
Condensate pump, if you have one, is running (a dead pump is a call)
4 Ice check
No ice on the indoor coil
No ice on the refrigerant lines (inside or outside)
If you find ice on any line, turn the system off or set the thermostat to Fan Only, then check the air filter. Ice means an airflow problem or something in the outdoor unit not working right, and running the system anyway can damage the compressor. Call or text us and we will take it from there.
5 Outdoor unit
Outdoor fan is spinning
Outdoor fan or compressor not running: pull the disconnect or set the thermostat to Fan Only until someone comes
The large insulated line feels cool and may be sweating
You can feel refrigerant moving in the small bare line (it runs warm)
6 Airflow
Air is moving from the vents, and you can feel the blower moving air at the furnace cabinet
Blower running but not cooling or heating: air filter is clean (you can see light through it)
Blower running but the outdoor fan is not, or you cannot feel the compressor running: that is a call to us or to an HVAC contractor (Fan Only or pull the disconnect until then)
Blower not running at all: turn the system Off at the thermostat so it stops trying (a furnace can overheat without its blower, an A/C freezes its coil)
No humming or clicking without the system actually starting
7 Vents
Supply and return vents are open and unblocked
No dampers closed (electric dampers, or a small metal handle on the duct that can work itself shut)
Skip the checklist and call a professional right away if any of these apply
You smell gas. Leave the house first, then call the gas company or 911.
A breaker keeps tripping after you reset it.
Water is pooling near the furnace or the indoor coil.
Anything involving refrigerant, which is EPA-regulated and restricted to licensed technicians.

When can someone come out, and what does it cost? Same day, weekdays, evenings or weekends. The service call is $80 weekdays 7am to 6pm, with $40 added weeknights until 10pm and all weekend. The $80 is credited toward the repair, and we cover Ogden down to Provo and Grantsville across to Coalville and Heber.
What if the house is hot and the A/C cannot be fixed tonight? You can rent a portable A/C from us for $150 covering delivery, setup and takedown, plus $20 per day, and $10 a day for a third unit. We carry two high-efficiency portable units that cover about 900 square feet together, plus a portable swamp cooler, so the house stays livable until the repair is finished.
What if the furnace needs more than a one-night repair? Multi-day repairs are ours to finish — we tell you plainly, quote it in advance, and come back until it’s done. When a system truly needs replacing, we say so plainly and show you why — and if you’d like, we’ll recommend a local installer we trust.
