The outside flap
The flap outside has to swing fully open when the dryer runs. A stuck or lint-packed flap is what makes a dryer take three cycles, so it gets cleared and checked.
Airflow verified
The transition hose behind the dryer reconnected and sealed with foil tape, replaced if it is crushed or plastic, and the airflow checked at the outlet with the dryer running.
Long dry times are the first sign
Lint in the vent restricts airflow. The dryer runs longer for the same load, the top of it gets hot, the laundry room turns warm and humid, and the heating element cycles on its high limit. A blocked vent is the most common reason a dryer takes two cycles, and the lint it holds is the leading cause of dryer fires.
Signs the vent is due: two or three cycles to dry a load, the dryer or the room hot to the touch, lint around the outside flap or no flap movement while the dryer runs, a burnt smell, or a house that has changed hands with no record of it ever being cleaned.

Why does my dryer take two or three cycles?
Almost always a vent that has never been cleaned, not a failing dryer. The duct fills with lint over the years, airflow drops, and the dryer runs longer for the same load. Brushing the full run and clearing the outside flap fixes it in the same visit.
How do I know it is the vent and not the dryer?
Run the dryer and look at the flap outside. It should swing fully open with a strong, warm airflow behind it. Barely open, or lint packed around it, is a vent problem. If the flap opens hard and the dryer still will not dry, that points to the dryer itself.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

Can you replace the hose behind the dryer?
Yes. The transition hose behind the dryer is the most common weak point: crushed, kinked, or plastic that should not be there. We replace it with a proper transition duct in the same visit when it needs it.
