What a ductless mini-split is
A ductless mini-split is a heat pump that skips the ductwork. A small outdoor unit connects to one or more wall- or ceiling-mounted indoor heads through a slim refrigerant line set. Because a mini-split both heats and cools, it can replace window units and space heaters, condition a space your main system can’t keep up with, or add comfort without the cost and mess of running new ducts.

What to look for when you shop for one
Right-sized for the space
The system should be sized to the room or rooms it’s conditioning — an oversized mini-split short-cycles and never dehumidifies, an undersized one can’t keep up. Right-sizing is what makes it comfortable and efficient.
Clean line set & a proper vacuum
A mini-split lives and dies by the refrigerant line set. It should be routed cleanly, with a deep vacuum pulled to remove moisture and air and the exact charge weighed in — the steps that keep an inverter system running quietly for years. Ask how they’re verifying the vacuum, not just assuming it.
Surge protection & commissioned to spec
Inverter electronics are sensitive, so surge protection matters. The system should also be verified against the manufacturer’s spec in both heating and cooling, documented in writing, permitted, and done to code.

Why a mini-split stops heating or cooling
Most ductless failures come from a short list. A clogged filter or a dirty blower wheel chokes airflow, so the head runs and runs and still never holds the temperature. Low refrigerant from a leak in the line set leaves it blowing warm in cooling and weak in heating. A failed indoor or outdoor fan motor, a communication fault between the head and the outdoor unit, or a clogged condensate line that makes the head drip round out the usual suspects. In winter, an outdoor unit caked in ice usually points to a defrost or airflow problem rather than the weather. Pulling the filters and washing them is the one check worth doing yourself before you call anyone.
Our after-hours work is emergency A/C and furnace repair, and if you tell us what your mini-split is doing we will say plainly whether it sounds like something we can help with. If it is not, we will point you to a contractor who works on them, and if the house is hot while you wait, we can usually set up a portable A/C the same day.
Questions to ask about warranty coverage
A verbal promise isn’t a warranty. Before you sign anything, get clear answers on: how many years of manufacturer parts coverage and whether it requires registration, how many years of labor coverage the installer themselves provides, and whether diagnostic visits during that window are free or billed. Get it in writing, not just a sales pitch.

Can a ductless mini-split heat a house in winter?
Yes. A mini-split is a heat pump, so it heats as well as it cools, and cold-climate models keep producing heat well below freezing. That makes them a common choice for additions and hard-to-heat rooms along the Wasatch Front.
Why is my mini-split blowing warm air?
The most common causes are a clogged filter or dirty blower wheel, low refrigerant from a leak in the line set, a failed indoor or outdoor fan motor, or a communication fault between the head and the outdoor unit. Pulling the filters and washing them is the one check worth doing yourself before you call anyone.
Are ductless mini-splits efficient?
