Almost always airflow, not size
Most hot-room and weak-vent complaints in Salt Lake homes are airflow problems. Very few are a furnace or A/C that is the wrong size.

Questions
Is this the same as a tune-up?
No. A tune-up checks the equipment. The airflow diagnostic checks whether the air is getting where it should. They pair well, which is why the diagnostic is half price with a tune-up.
My upstairs is hot. Do I need a bigger A/C?
Almost never. That is usually returns, duct leakage or balancing. The diagnostic tells you which.
Will you fix what you find?
Yes. Balancing, duct sealing, added returns and zoning are all work we do, priced from the report.
Canyon Comfort’s $80 Airflow Diagnostic is designed for weak vents, hot or cold rooms, systems that run constantly, and HVAC equipment that cannot move enough air through the home. We measure total airflow, supply and return static pressure, and where air is being restricted or lost so the recommendation is based on actual readings. Common causes include dirty blower wheels or evaporator coils, restrictive filters, undersized returns, duct leakage, damaged duct runs, and incorrect equipment settings. Regular weekday appointments are available from 7am to 6pm, with after-hours service until 10pm and weekend scheduling. Canyon Comfort works on all HVAC brands and serves Ogden down to Provo and Grantsville across to Heber. If the airflow problem is tied to a failed A/C or furnace, a regular repair diagnostic is $80 weekdays and $120 evenings or weekends, with the weekday diagnostic credited toward an approved repair.
Why duct cleaning usually isn’t the answer
Duct cleaning gets advertised everywhere, and it has a real (but narrow) use: clearing dust out of your vents after a remodel, or if you’ve had rodents or mold. For everyday weak airflow, though, it almost never helps — because the ducts usually aren’t where your air gets choked.
Here’s the part the ads leave out: nearly all of your air passes through three parts that aren’t in your ducts at all — the furnace blower wheel, the A/C evaporator coil, and the furnace’s secondary heat exchanger. Season after season they build up a thick mat of dust and grime that strangles airflow like a kink in a hose. Blowing out clean duct walls does nothing for them — cleaning these parts is what actually brings the airflow, efficiency, and comfort back.
So before you pay for a duct cleaning, start with an A/C or furnace health inspection — $110 for either system, or $180 for both in one visit. We inspect the whole system, including the inside of it with an inspection camera, and email you a written System Health Report showing the real condition of the parts that move your air. Then you’ll know whether a cleaning is worth paying for, instead of guessing.

Where weak airflow actually comes from
Four things choke airflow in most Salt Lake City homes — and the ductwork is rarely the worst of them.
Dirty furnace blower wheel
The fan that pushes all your air cakes with dust over time, so it simply can’t move the volume it used to. Cleaning it is one of the biggest airflow wins there is.
Clogged evaporator (A/C) coil
The indoor coil sits right in the airstream and collects a thick mat of dust. A clogged coil strangles airflow and weakens cooling, so the air comes out warm even when the system runs nonstop — and in winter that same restriction overheats the furnace and trips it off.
Overly restrictive filters
Expensive high-MERV 1″ filters choke airflow. A quality MERV 8 breathes far better — or step up to a 5″ media cabinet for strong filtration without the airflow penalty.
Undersized returns & weak supply
If your system can’t pull in enough air, it can’t push enough out. Weak supply air at certain vents often traces back to returns or duct runs that were never sized right.
A hot upstairs and a cold basement share one root cause
If one room roasts while another freezes, that is an airflow problem as well — and you almost never need a bigger system to solve it.
Uneven temperatures come from the same place weak airflow does: air that isn’t getting where it needs to go. In most homes the culprits are unbalanced ductwork, attic and crawlspace ducts that leak and aren’t insulated, returns that are too small, and rooms that simply sit too far from the equipment. In July that shows up as a stuffy, hot upstairs over a cold basement. In January it runs in reverse, with the basement baking while the upstairs bedrooms never quite warm up.
We start by measuring instead of guessing: how much air the system is moving, how much of it is reaching each room, and where the rest is going. On one local home we found a vent blowing air a full 14°F warmer than the A/C coil, all from one uninsulated duct run in the attic. A good share of what we find is correctable in a single evening visit — a caked blower wheel, a choked coil, the wrong filter, dampers nobody has ever balanced. When the real fix is bigger than that — a duct re-run, new runs, or added returns — we quote and do that work too, and the measurements go with the job so nothing is guessed.

Spend your money where it counts
A clean furnace blower and A/C coil, the right filter, and ducts that are actually balanced will do far more for your airflow, your air quality and your power bill than blowing out the ducts ever will. Do I really need my air ducts cleaned?
Usually not. Duct cleaning helps air quality after a remodel, or when there is evidence of rodents or mold, but it rarely fixes weak airflow. Why is my airflow so weak?
The five usual causes are a dirty blower wheel, a clogged evaporator coil, an over-restrictive high-MERV filter, undersized returns, and leaky or uninsulated ducts. Can weak airflow keep my furnace from heating?
Yes. Restricted airflow makes a furnace overheat and trip its high-limit switch, which is why it short cycles, blows lukewarm air, or shuts itself down partway through a cycle on a cold night. The same blower, coil and filter problems that weaken cooling in July are behind a lot of the no-heat calls we take in January.
What is the best air filter for airflow?
A quality MERV 8 filter is the best choice for most homes. It filters well without choking airflow, while the pricey high-MERV 1″ filters restrict air and make the system work harder. If you want more filtration, a 5″ media cabinet gives it to you without the airflow penalty.
How do I improve my home’s air quality?
Start with a clean furnace blower and coil and a properly sized filter, then add what fits the house — an air scrubber, a 5″ media filter, or a steam humidifier — to handle Utah’s dust, dry winters and inversions.
