The Airflow Diagnostic is $80: we measure static pressure on the supply and return side, read actual airflow and temperature split at the equipment, and find the restriction instead of guessing at it. Even temperatures, better efficiency, lower bills
A hot upstairs, a freezing basement, and rooms that never feel right are almost never a sign that you need a bigger system. They are a sign of unbalanced airflow and ducts that leak away the air you paid to heat and cool. Our $80 Airflow Diagnostic measures it instead of guessing at it, and the written report tells you exactly what to fix.

We read static pressure, airflow, and temperature split at the equipment and at the registers, so the problem room stops being a mystery.
Attic ducts that leak heat
Attics hit 130°F in summer and freeze in winter. Uninsulated and leaking runs up there are the most common cause we find.
A thermostat setting worth trying
If your thermostat allows it, running the blower 15 to 20 minutes an hour mixes the air and evens out the temperature between floors. That one is free.
Who does the bigger work
Sealing, insulating, and adding duct runs is work we do ourselves. You keep the report and the numbers, and we quote the job.
A real example: we measured the air leaving a bedroom vent 14°F warmer than the air coming straight off the A/C coil, and all of that loss was happening inside one uninsulated attic duct. Sealing and insulating that single run fixed the room. That is the kind of fix that pays for itself in comfort and in lower bills.
Evaporative cooler repair, startup and shutdown
Swamp coolers are still everywhere in Salt Lake City, and Utah’s hard water is what kills them. We service, repair and seasonally start up and shut down evaporative coolers on the roof or at ground level.
Why is my swamp cooler not cooling?
Usually a dry pad, a failed pump, or a float set wrong so water never reaches the pads. Air moving without evaporation feels like a fan, not a cooler. We test the pump, the float and the water flow before replacing anything.
Why is it leaking or overflowing?
Scale seizes the float valve open, or the pan has rusted through where standing water sat all winter. We find which it is and tell you plainly whether the pan is still worth patching.
When should I start it up for summer?
Once the overnight freeze risk has passed, usually April in the valley. Startup covers a pad inspection (new pads are extra), pump test, float adjustment, belt and bearings where fitted, and a leak test before you rely on it.
When should I shut my swamp cooler down for winter in Salt Lake City?
Before the first hard freeze, normally October. Shutdown drains the line and pan, clears mineral buildup, and covers the unit so water is not sitting in it through winter.
How often do swamp cooler pads need replacing in Utah?
Most homes here need pads yearly because of the mineral content in Utah water. Rigid media pads last longer than aspen but still scale up and choke airflow.
Should I switch to air conditioning?
Sometimes, and sometimes another season of swamp cooler is the smarter spend. We do not sell or install new systems, so you get the math without anything riding on the answer.

If your A/C cannot be fixed tonight, we can usually deliver and set up portable cooling the same day so your house stays livable while you wait — even when another company is handling the repair or the install.

How your furnace and A/C work
- Hot, high-pressure side (compressor to expansion valve)
- Cold, low-pressure side (expansion valve to compressor)
- EvaporatorThe evaporator coil, usually an A-coil above the furnace, is where your home’s air gets cooled. Cold refrigerant flows through the coil while the blower moves warm return air across its fins. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the air, and moisture condenses on the coil and drains away through the condensate line. If the coil gets dirty, freezes up, or the drain clogs, you can lose cooling and may find water around the furnace.
- Expansion valve and filter drierBoth are typically located on the small liquid line near the evaporator coil. The filter drier removes moisture and debris from the refrigerant before they can cause problems elsewhere in the system. The expansion valve controls how much refrigerant enters the evaporator and creates a large pressure drop. At that lower pressure, the refrigerant can boil at a low temperature and absorb heat from the air moving across the coil.
- CompressorSealed inside the outdoor unit, the compressor is what keeps refrigerant moving through the system. It pulls in low-pressure refrigerant vapor from the suction line and compresses it into a hot, high-pressure vapor before sending it through the condenser coil. Because it works under high pressure and heat, compressor problems can quickly stop the entire A/C system from cooling. Electrical problems, overheating, low refrigerant flow, or internal wear can all prevent it from starting or running properly.
- Condenser coil and fanThe outdoor fan pulls air through the condenser coil while hot refrigerant flows through the tubing inside it. As heat is released into the outdoor air, the refrigerant changes from a hot vapor into a high-pressure liquid. Dirty fins, blocked airflow, or a failing fan motor make it harder for the system to get rid of heat, increasing pressure and putting additional strain on the compressor.
- Heat exchangersWhen the furnace is heating, the burners send hot combustion gases through the heat exchanger while the blower moves household air across the outside of it. That heat transfers into the air without mixing combustion gases with the air you breathe. High-efficiency condensing furnaces also use a secondary heat exchanger to capture additional heat before the exhaust leaves the furnace. Cracks, corrosion, or other heat-exchanger damage can create a safety concern, which is why the heat exchanger should be inspected during furnace maintenance.
- Blower wheelThe blower wheel moves air through your home in both heating and cooling. It pulls air in through the return ducts and filter, then pushes it across the evaporator coil or heat exchanger and into the supply ducts. Dust buildup on the wheel, a restrictive filter, motor problems, or an out-of-balance wheel can reduce airflow, create noise, and put additional strain on the system. Poor airflow at the vents can start here, but duct restrictions and other airflow problems can cause it too.

Do you install new thermostats?
Yes. We install and replace thermostats as part of our HVAC work. If you’re not sure which thermostat is compatible with your system, give us a call and we’ll help you figure it out.
Do you charge extra for evening or weekend service?
A little. Weekdays 7am to 6pm are our regular $80 service call. Weeknights until 10pm and all weekend add $40.
Are you a 24-hour emergency HVAC company?
Days, evenings and weekends are all part of the normal schedule — weekdays 7am to 6pm, weeknights until 10pm, Saturday 8am to 10pm, and Sunday 8am to 9pm. We are not a 24-hour company, and nothing runs past 10pm. If it is a gas leak or suspected carbon monoxide, leave the house and call 911 or your gas company first.
My furnace will not turn on. Can you come tonight?
Yes, if you reach us before 10pm on a weeknight, before 10pm Saturday, or before 9pm Sunday. A no-heat call is treated as an emergency. Common issues like ignitors, flame sensors, and pressure switches can often be repaired that evening; if it needs a control board or blower motor, we’ll order the part and return to install it.
Do you install new furnaces or air conditioners?
No, we are a repair-only HVAC service. Our goal is to keep your system going for as long as repairing it still makes sense. When the day comes for a new system, we can recommend trusted local contractors to handle the installation. If we tell you it’s time to replace, it’s because we genuinely believe it’s time and wouldn’t feel right selling you a repair that could cost you more in the long run.
What does a tune-up or health inspection cost?
A furnace health inspection is $110, an A/C health inspection is $110, and both together are $180. Every inspection ends with a written Canyon Comfort System Health Report that lists your airflow, static pressure, temperature split, electrical readings, and a carbon monoxide test on the furnace.
Is a $29 or $79 tune-up actually worth it?
A $29 or $79 HVAC tune-up can still be useful, but it’s worth understanding what’s included and how that price works. At those prices, a company is likely losing money on the tune-up itself, which means that cost has to be made up through customers who purchase additional services or through future repairs. Most basic tune-ups also don’t go as far as ours when it comes to checking airflow and the operation of the entire system. Canyon Comfort tune-ups are $110 for the first system and $90 for each additional system, and we check airflow along with the operation of every component. We only offer one level of tune-up, so there isn’t a basic package designed to lead into a more expensive tier or maintenance plan. You’ll also receive a written System Health Report and a one-year diagnostic warranty with every tune-up.

Multi-system tune-ups are $110 for the first system and $90 for each additional system completed during the same visit, and an A/C and furnace tuned up together are $180 total, and two full systems — two furnace and two A/C tune-ups — are $340 together.
