Millcreek’s east bench filled in through the fifties and sixties with the ramblers that define it still — long, low houses under what has grown into one of the valley’s great tree canopies. Nearly all of them were built with a swamp cooler, and while much of the neighborhood has since converted to central air, the holdouts are everywhere, quietly cooling for pennies.
The bench is genuinely good swamp cooler country. Evenings cool early here as air drains off Millcreek and Big Cottonwood canyons, so the cooler works with the climate instead of against it. The same geography brings real wind, though, and a winter cover that isn’t strapped down properly doesn’t see February.

Everyone around us has switched to A/C. Should we?
Only if the cooler stops earning its place. Millcreek’s canyon-cooled evenings are ideal territory for evaporative cooling, and a serviced unit costs a fraction of central air to run. When a cooler truly is finished we say so, and since we repair A/C as well, you’ll get the comparison without a pitch. Until then, there’s no rush to abandon a machine that works.
Do the canyon winds matter for the cooler?
Mostly in winter. The east bench catches real wind off the canyons, and a loose cover doesn’t survive it. We strap covers down properly at shutdown, because a cover that blows open in January leaves snowmelt sitting in the pan until spring.
What ends up in the pan under Millcreek’s big trees?
Leaves, seeds and twigs, on top of the usual mineral scale. Organic debris clogs the pump screen and sours the smell of the system faster than scale alone, which is why the fall clean-out matters extra here.
My cooler runs but the air isn’t cold. What’s wrong?
The classic three: pads too far gone to pass air, water not reaching the pads through clogged distribution, or a pump losing its fight with scale. Each is an ordinary repair, and each is cheaper than a summer of weak cooling.
